Shelter Me

To bring comfort to a world that has many people staying at home to slow the spread of COVID-19, Father Michael Joncas has written a prayer-song, “Shelter Me.” Joncas is a world-renowned composer most recognized for his hymn, “On Eagle’s Wings.” Ordained in 1980, he joined the faculty at the University of St. Thomas in 1991. Now, as artist-in-residence, he writes musical compositions for the university, which has included the school’s new alma mater.

2020 Convention Reports:

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the Convention was unable to be held as planned. Protocols were implemented following the guidelines issued by National Office. Members at all levels are encouraged to read The Catholic Women's League of Canada Update ll to Covid 19 Pandemic Response which addresses the impact on Conventions and other consequences such as Officers' Terms of Office.

Since we were unable to gather as a sisterhood, the Calgary Diocesan Executive Council (Diocesan Officers and Parish Council Presidents) and Regional Chairs participated in a video conference on Saturday, May 2nd, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon.

March 20, 2020

Dear Sisters of the Calgary Diocesan Council,

The COVID-19 virus has affected each and every one of us in some way, and although I was praying that our 98th Annual Diocesan Convention would proceed, I have now been directed by the National Executive to cancel our convention.

I have received instructions on fulfilling the requirements of the Constitution & Bylaws. I will follow those instructions, which I will share at a later date.

If you have registered for convention, rest assured that you will be reimbursed as soon as possible, hopefully within a week. If you reserved a room at the Delta South, please be sure to cancel your reservation. Their phone number is (403) 278-5050.

I will be in discussions with the Delta South hotel regarding the cancellation of the convention, however my hope is all will be well, as we want convention to be at their hotel in 2021.

My sincere thanks to the Convention Planning Committee, led by Rosemary Krickler and Bernice Thomas, Co-Chairs and representatives from Holy Name, Holy Spirit, Sacred Heart, St. Albert the Great, St. Bernadette, St. Bonaventure, St. Gerard, St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. Michael’s councils. Also assisting us were the diocesan representatives Jan Morel, Renee Spohn, Kathleen Winter and Janet MacPhee. Your enthusiasm at our planning meetings was infectious, and I know it would have been a wonderful convention. A special thank you to our webmaster, Cheryl Snider who spent hours upon hours of her time to bring us into the 21st century with online registration!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

May Our Lady of Good Counsel surround us with her protective mantel, and guide us through this crisis.

Keeping you in prayer,
Your Sister in the League
Jan Myhre
Calgary Diocesan President
